Since 1998, Jacob’s Ladder Job Center, Inc. has been working to break the cycle of chronic poverty through job readiness and related services in Charlotte’s fragile and challenged neighborhoods. Jacob's Ladder's mission is to help the unemployed and underemployed find and keep living wage jobs. Jacob’s Ladder’s programs provide a safety net and a “hand up” to clients who often fall through the cracks of other agencies. The job readiness program pairs clients with volunteers to identify and remove barriers which prevent people from finding and keeping a job. Jacob's Ladder believes that jobs and living wages are fundamental to fighting poverty and keeping Charlotte an attractive place to live for everyone at all levels of society. Originally located on the campus of Seigle Avenue Presbyterian Church, Jacob's Ladder is housed in Plaza Presbyterian Church and has helped 4,000 in their job searches. More than 2,000 of these have found jobs.

Seigle Avenue Preschool Cooperative prepares at-risk children and families for success in school and success in life. For over 20 years, the Preschool has provided an early educational intervention to address the individual needs of children we serve. Specialized curricula and innovative approaches to early childhood development prepare children to succeed in school. Parents are not charged tuition to attend, but are required to volunteer at the preschool and attend weekly parenting workshops. Fifty-six at-risk 2, 3 and 4 year old children receive a high quality, tuition free preschool education each year. The Preschool is a five-star center, a United Way agency, certified by the Better Business Bureau Consumer Foundation, and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. www.seigleavepreschool.org

The YMCA Strengthening Families Program serves local families with children who are living in or on the threshold of poverty.  This program is part of YMCA of Greater Charlotte Community Development which is committed to building a stronger community through service to families in need.  With programs to address issues around poverty, employment, health and literacy, YMCA Community Development collaborates with other agencies and uses donations and grants to fulfill the YMCA’s mission to serve all.

YMCA Strengthening Families Program connects social workers, parent educators and a registered nurse to over 175 local families living in poverty each year.  Through encouragement and education about local resources and important health and quality of life issues, YMCA Strengthening Families staff offer individualized support to families on their journey toward stability. http://www.ymcacharlotte.org/comdev/programlist/sfprogram.aspx
